Hypnosis Hypnotherapy – what are they?

People often want to know the differences between them. Before we have a more direct ‘look’ at hypnotherapy, it’s important to try and define what hypnosis is.

Hypnosis is a relaxed state of mind that most of us seem to experience at one time or another. Often occurring quite spontaneously. And typically it can happen while daydreaming, dropping off to sleep at night, or when simply absorbed in a good book or film. It is simply a very relaxed state, during which time the critical factor of the mind is often reduced or suspended. Although the mind itself and the thought processes can often be found to be very active.

We even do it when we are driving! How many times have you driven somewhere, completely safely, and wonder how you got there? You have little conscious recollection of the journey but you have still navigated the route with ease. This is similar to how hypnosis works.

Hypnosis at work in the nonconscious mind

Hypnosis works by recognising, and making use of the nonconscious, (unconscious or subconscious) parts of the mind. The nonconscious mind stores an enormous amount of information. Although a person doesn’t normally have any conscious knowledge of it. It still causes the conscious mind to think and react in the way it does.

Sometimes, there are ‘conflicts’ between the way these parts of the mind see or feel about things. This can give rise to problems all too easily. Take phobia of spiders as an example. The conscious mind knows that there is no logical reason to be afraid of spiders. But the nonconscious mind has attached a fear to them, and the fear overrides it.

What is hypnotherapy – what it’s all about?

Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis as a tool to unlock the capacity of the nonconscious mind to bring about a therapeutic change.

So the differences between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are quite easy to define. Hypnosis is the action of going into a hypnotic trance and hypnotherapy is undertaking therapy during the hypnosis.

Your first treatment session

Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy; using words, (also images, sounds and emotions), to help you change the actions and behaviours you wish to get rid of. I will ask about your problem/s. Your first treatment session will be either one or two hours long.

Assuming that your problem is one which can be ‘sorted’ using hypnotherapy I would expect to get you where you need to be in no more than 2 sessions. (Traditional hypnotherapy dictates you have a weekly session for a longer period of time).

If you have not been in hypnosis before we will need to explain hypnosis to you and answer any questions you have. Before we start the treatment you will be asked to sign an Informed Consent form. You must not sign this if you are unsure about any aspect of the process.

You will be taken into a relaxed state where you will be able to gain control od your life. These will have a significant effect during the session but out of it as well. You will be given a very powerful post-hypnotic tool called a psychosomatic anchor. This anchors you to all the positive changes you have made. Once this is in place you should have it for the rest of your life.

The sessions are all about giving you control – you will have this throughout the session.

What can be treated by Hypnotherapy?

Fears, phobias and anxieties – animals, insects, etc., flying, exam nerves, panic attacks, general anxiety, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, dentists and many more

Unwanted habits – nail biting, bed-wetting, smoking, substance abuse, eating disorders, compulsive behaviours, and many more

Lack of confidence – overcoming shyness, public speaking, job interviews, self-worth, esteem, image, and many others

Physiological problems – IBS, PMT, migraine, muscular tension, pain control, coping with severe/terminal illness and many more

Emotional problems – unresolved issues – both past & present; guilt, anger, resentment, and many others.

All hypnosis work is a natural process and its effects vary from person to person dependent on the recipients ability to conform to the process and any aftercare procedures. As such some people may find it highly effective and others will find only a slight effect on their condition.
